Brett Laniosh is on a mission to shout about beer and has set up his own beer consultancy to do just that.
“I want to show everyone what a great product beer is. There is massive interest in beer out there and I want to work with breweries, pub companies, licensees and trade organisations to raise awareness with consumers and also improve beer quality”, says Brett.
The Beer Consultancy team connects those that make beer with those that serve the beer and with the people who drink the beer.
The Beer Consultancy differs from most licensed trade training providers. Offering trusted advice from both technical experts and commercial trainers with long experience of sustaining successful pub businesses, the aim it to enhance the tenant’s profitability.
The Team
Brett Laniosh has been volunteering with CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) since 1977 including 11 years as a national director and was responsible for setting up the National Beer Scoring Scheme which has proved invaluable to CAMRA branches in assessing beer quality for the Good Beer Guide. He also managed a major strand of the revitalisation project focusing on Information, Education and Training.
Brett has worked in the education sector for thirty years including roles as a teacher, teaching advisor and lecturer.
He is a project coordinator for the European Beer Consumers Union, a member of the Cellar Craft team and a member of the British Guild of Beer Writers. He has delivered training in pubs, in breweries (including Wye Valley and Hobsons) and for Pub Companies (including Black Country Ales and Punch Taverns).
“I recommend Brett Laniosh with complete confidence. I have known him for more than a decade and have been impressed by his hard work and attention to detail. He has a formidable knowledge of all aspects of brewing and the licensed trade, he writes lucidly about them and speaks with great authority. He has a sparkling sense of humour that enlivens talks and discussions.” Roger Protz – Award winning beer writer and journalist, Editor of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide
“I have known Brett for over 35 years and have worked with him in the beer and publishing sectors, most recently as one of the UK representatives to the European Beer Consumer Union, on whose Executive I sit and where he tutors on managing volunteer staff and how to get people interested in traditional, craft and special beers. I am happy to recommend his consultancy services to anyone in the licensed trade looking to further their knowledge about the new world of beer.” Tim Webb, International Beer Writer and joint author of the The World Atlas of Beer
Duncan Ward has a trade career that goes back to the early 1980’s.
His first pub in Norwich, a tiny wet led house, earned inclusion in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide (GBG) within a year.
The following three decades saw him take the reins of a further seven outlets, all selected for GBG listing. He’s run bars in France and the USA, marketed fine wines, worked in wholesale and been business manager of two independent breweries.
His business mantra is simple. “Running a successful pub is about doing easy tasks well. There are just an awful lot of easy tasks to remember!” His time ‘at the coalface’ offers licensees a practical approach to tackling all aspects of pub management, from beer quality to payroll, glass washing to budgetary control.
Like Brett, Duncan is nationally active in CAMRA, reporting to two steering groups on issues of licensing and security. He also served as Regional Director for Wales.
Testimonials
“Our beer training was delivered by Brett – a very friendly and approachable gent. It was a fab day, full of fun and knowledge. The staff enjoyed the activities and everyone, including the more experienced colleagues, said they had learnt new things. As manager, I am using the knowledge given to us on the day to pass on to all team members, I will also include it in starter introduction packs.” Sarah Gibbs, The King and Castle, Kidderminster
“On the course that Brett ran there were staff that knew very little about real ale and some that knew more. We all walked away from it with having learnt something. Brett came across very enthusiastic and gave us a great insight. Since the course all of my staff have independently approached me and told me how much they enjoyed it. We have introduced a board that has all the ales on with the ABV, origin, etc. and this has already proved very popular. We have also started using sold out signs rather than turning pump clips around, again this has had a very positive reception. As the manager, I have noticed how the staff are much more confident in talking about ales and giving tasters. I would highly recommend this course to all pubs.” Kate Byng, The Ladybird Inn, Bromsgrove
“We partnered with Brett Laniosh Consultancy to present a half day workshop to our Publicans. Brett was a pleasure to work with through the process of organising the workshop, and the delivery was excellent and engaging. Brett has a very good knowledge of the Beer and Pub industry which showed through on the day and we hope we can work together again in the future.” David Pawson, Head of External PR & Communications, Punch Taverns
