Statement from the WBCS:
"The Society notes with grave concern the intention of BW to sell the cottages
at Tardebigge New Wharf. The importance of New Wharf is that it is a complete
and largely unaltered group canal related buildings. Although the site is within
the Worcester & Birmingham Canal Conservation Area that does not afford the same
degree of protection as that of a single responsible owner such as BW which
boasts that "Our heritage is safe in our hands". The Society is not confident
that covenants attached to the sale of these cottages will prevent the erosion
of the essential character of New Wharf. This is a working wharf and we fear
that there may be pressure from future residents to restrict these activities.
We fully understand the difficult funding situation faced by BW but consider
that this to be a retrograde step."
