The Macclesfield Canal

Looking down on towns; attractive landscapes and roving bridges

1999

A very pretty canal that's only bad characteristic we found was its lack of depth so we travelled slowly along here. The good news is that apparently it has been dredged since our visit, which is excellent news. Congleton is a pleasant place to moor. The Wharf is an ordinary basic pub serving excellent Greenalls Mild and Bitter. The Moss is smarter and serves good quality Marstons Bitter and Pedigree. Food is really good and served in large quantities though we did have to wait an hour for it! Bosley locks are easy enough.

We didn't find Macclesfield that inspiring. The town is a walk down the hill and we didn't fancy the return trip. There are a few useful shops near bridge 37. We found Bollington much more inviting. The best moorings are by the aqueduct. Note there is no pub at the Adelphi. The town has plenty of pubs with the town a short walk downhill. The best we found was the Meridan, an unspoilt local's pub serving Wilsons Bitter that has been sympathetically restored since our visit and now serves Moroccan food!. The junction at Marple is a picturesque end (or start!) to this interesting canal.
